Where Did Fathers Day Come From?
Well we have all heard of it, you've probably given your Dad a gift or maybe performed a few chores so that he could take it easy on this day but where did it originate from?
Well, it is widely believed that it was first celebrated in America in July the 5th 1908 in a small church in a town called Fairmont which is in the state of Virginia. There is an alternative view that a Mrs Sonora Dodd of Washington thought of the idea whilst attending Mothers Day service at her local church in 1909. Regardless of which account is true, in this early part of the 1900's it wasn't a recognized holiday or celebration. In fact unlike Mothers Day which was celebrated all over the world Fathers Day was more of a ridiculed idea and it wasn't until the 1930's that it became truly recognized, and then only really in America.
The rest of the world has since adopted the day and it is now as widely celebrated as Mothers Day. The actual day of the celebration varies dramatically from country to country with most countries celebrating it in June or July. Here in Australia we celebrate Fathers Day on the first Sunday in September.
Celebrations for this special day include the giving of gifts and cards (see our fantastic selection here), making them breakfast in bed, taking them out to lunch, relieving them of a few of their chores for the day and organizing family reunions.
Whilst it cannot be denied that Fathers Day has become an enormously commercial event it is still a great opportunity to celebrate and Honor our fathers ... and just in case you forget, you could always make him feel extra special on International Men's Day which was introduced in 1999 and is celebrated on the 19th of November.
Well we hope that this has added a little insight into the origins and reasons for Fathers Day. Don't forget to take a look at the extra special gifts we have to help celebrate this day - The Team @ Gifts2theDoor
